A aromatic wine in a drier style, with mandarin, tangelo and white grapefruit coming to mind on the palate alongside the classic Granny Smith Grigio notes and a little wild-ferment banana funk. More of those hybrid citrus fruits come to mind with the acidity, and there’s some oak spice and sea spray to balance.
The first Pinot Grigio the team at Mandala have put out, but you’d never know it - here’s to many more to come!
The 2019 vintage is the first Pinot Grigio made by Charles and the team. With the winemaking decision to move towards a drier, Italian style, Charles take on Pinot Grigio involves bright aromatic fresh stone fruits, with subtle oak influence to provide structure and complexity to the wine.
The Pinot Grigio fruit was hand-picked in the cool of morning, then whole bunch pressed with a 25% portion of the juice fermented wild in aged French barriques and the remainder fermented slowly in tank at low temperature. The resultant wine is brightly aromatic and vibrant, yet complex, textural and savoury on the palate.
Established in 1999 with the planting of a tiny plot of Pinot Noir, Mandala came into being properly in 2007 with the purchase of an additional vineyard and theconstruction of a winery in Dixon’s Creek.
The Dixon’s Creek location has grown into a spectacular tourist attraction located conveniently close to Melbourne, with an impressive cellar door, scenic views and a highly-commended restaurant – all sadly shuttered for the time being, though takeaway wine sales are still available.
